A Sample text for Mass for First Holy Communion

Preamble: Thank you for all the effort and preparation you put into making your parish celebration of First Holy Communion something beautiful each and every year. It is hoped that this ‘template’ of some of the texts available for this ceremony in the new translation of the Roman Missal may be of help to you and ease the burden of your work. [There are a number of choices included. We also offer advice in the template indicated by blue text which is not designed to appear in your own text or booklet]

One of the first tasks we have before us to ensure that each candidate being presented for First Holy Communion is eligible – that they are baptised and belong to the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church. If children of other Christian denominations, other faiths or of none who are part of the 1st Communion class wish to attend the Mass, they are of course welcome – with their parents’ permission – to come forward at communion time with their arms crossed over their chest to receive a blessing.

The active and fruitful participation of the candidates on their First Communion Day does not mean that they all must have something to ‘do’ during the ceremony. The Sacrament is primarily about what the Lord is gifting to the candidates. No child should be under any pressure to ‘perform’ on the day they first receive the Eucharist.

One of the most effective ways of achieving active participation is to choose and promote music that everyone can sing or that the candidates can help lead from their places in the congregation. We hope our list of suggested hymns from a wide variety of sources may be of assistance to you. In this year when Dublin is hosting the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, it would be most appropriate that your ceremony includes the Congress Anthem “Though we are many”. If your school is unfamiliar with the new settings for the Mass or the 2012 International Eucharistic Congress Anthem, perhaps your local parish choir directors and cantors may be able to give you some help.

Some people present on the day may not be familiar with posture during the Liturgy. The celebrants may give simple directions to help with this.

Many parishes have found it very helpful if a parent makes short announcements 3-5 minutes before Mass begins: Encourage everyone to join in the hymns and responses, to keep a prayerful atmosphere and a respectful silence especially during the time for Holy Communion. From the point of view of best practice in relation to child safeguarding, as well as promoting a prayerful atmosphere, it is best to ask everyone NOT to take any photographs during the ceremony itself. There is always plenty of time for photographs afterwards, whilst still being respectful in God’s House. It is also important to remind people to make sure their mobile phones are switched OFF so as not to disturb the prayer. Wishing every grace and blessing upon you, the candidates and all your preparation.
All STAND and Sing the Entrance hymn as the ministers and celebrants enter

Celebrant: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen

Celebrant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
All: And with your spirit

If the candidates have symbols to present of their giftedness or of their work and preparation for receiving First Communion – now is the ideal time in which they can be brought to the sanctuary as they can set a good context for the celebration. These symbols can be placed in their ‘Do this In Memory Space’ in the sanctuary or to one side [preferably not in front of the altar or ambo and definitely not on top of the altar]. If a commentary accompanies the bringing forward of these symbols, make sure it is scripted and brief.

Penitential Rite: (the responses can be sung)

(Here are some suggested Scripture passages for Year B which we are celebrating in 2012)

First Reading

From the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 11:23-26
This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you:
that on the same night that he was betrayed,
the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it,
and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’ In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said,
‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’
Until the Lord comes, therefore,
every time you eat this bread and drink this cup,
you are proclaiming his death.
The word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

Or:
A reading from the first Book of Kings 19:4-8

Elijah went into the wilderness, a days journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he were dead. Lord, he said I have had enough. Take my life: I am no better than my ancestors. Then he lay down and went to sleep. But an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. But the angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you. So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, themountainofGod.
The word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

Gospel acclamation (we stand to welcome Christ’s words and SING the acclamation – usually an Alleluia)
GOSPEL

The Lord be with you
And with your spirit
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 6:51-57

Glory to you O Lord.
Jesus said:
‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’
Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat? they said. Jesus replied:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man
and drink his blood,
you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood
has eternal life,
and I shall raise them up on the last day.
For my flesh is real food
and my blood is real drink.
Those who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
lives in me
and I live in them.
As I, who am sent by the living Father,
myself draw life from the Father,
so whoever eats me will draw life from me.’

The Lord be with you
And with your spirit
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 14:12-16.22-26

Glory to you O Lord.
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to Jesus, ‘Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?’ So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him, and say to the owner of the house which he enters, “The Master says: Where is my dining room in which I can eat the Passover with my disciples?” He will show you a large upper room furnished with couches, all prepared. Make the preparations for us there.’ The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and prepared the Passover.
And as they were eating he took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them. ‘Take it,’ he said ‘this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them, and all drank from it, and he said to them, ‘This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many. I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.’ After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.

Prayer of the Faithful: All stand
Sample Introduction by the Celebrant:

The Lord Jesus told us that the Father knows each one of us by name,
and knows the number of hairs on our heads.
Trusting in such loving kindness, we bring our prayers before the Lord.

5-6 intentions now follow. They are intentions announced to the people asking their prayer to God (i.e. in the way they are written, they do not directly address God). At the end of each one the people are invited to lift these prayers up with the invocation:

Lord hear us: Lord graciously hear us
or
Let us pray to the Lord: Lord hear our prayer
or
A Thiarna éist linn: A Thiarna bí ceannsa agus éist linn.

The prayers follow the following format:
Let us pray for…that… or We pray for …that… or For… that

Try and keep them brief and remember to pray for the wider human family and not just those present.

Sample conclusion by the Celebrant:

God our Father, we thank you for listening to our prayers.
Thank you above all for the gift of Jesus your Son.
May our hearts always welcome your love,
especially as you give it in your Word and in the Bread of Life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings

Celebrant: Look upon the offerings of the Church, O Lord,
All: It is right and just.

Common Preface V:
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

His Death we celebrate in Love,
His Resurrection we confess with living faith,
and his Coming in glory we await with unwavering hope.
And so, with all the Angels and the Saints,
we praise you as without end we acclaim:

The people sing or say aloud:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
Celebrant: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
so that they may become for us
the Body X and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion,
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take this, all of you, and eat of it:
For this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks,
he gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. do this in memory of me.

Celebrant: The mystery of faith.
And the people sing or say:
We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.
Or:
When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,
we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
Or:
Save us, Saviour of the world,
for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
Or:
My Lord and my God.

Then the celebrant, with hands extended, says:
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
to be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

C1: Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Benedict XVI our Pope and Diarmuid our Bishop,
his assistant bishops and all the clergy.

C2. Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints
who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,
and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.

The Celebrant takes the chalice and the paten with the host and,
raising both, he sings:
Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours,
for ever and ever.
All: Amen!

Priest: God our Father, you have brought us here together so that we can give you thanks and praise for all the wonderful things you have done.

We thank you for all that is beautiful in the world and for the happiness you have given us. We praise you for daylight and for your word which lights up our minds. We praise you for the earth, and all the people who live on it, and for our life which comes from you. We know that you are good. You love us and do great things for us.

Father, you are always thinking about your people; you never forget us. You sent your Son Jesus, who gave his life for us and who came to save us. He cured sick people; he cared for those who were poor and wept with those who were sad. He forgave sinners and taught us to forgive each other. He loved everyone and showed us how to be kind.
He took children in his arms and blessed them.

God our Father, all over the world your people praise you. So now we pray with the whole Church: with Benedict, our pope and Diarmuid our bishop.

In heaven the blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles and all the saints always sing your praise. Now we join with them and with the angels to adore you as we sing (say):

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Priest: God our Father, you are most holy and we want to show you that we are grateful.

We bring you bread and wine and ask you to send your Holy Spirit to make these gifts the X body and blood of Jesus your Son. Then we can offer to you what you have given to us.

On the night before he died, Jesus was having supper with his apostles. He took bread from the table. He gave you thanks and praise. Then he broke the bread, gave it to his friends, and said:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it:
For this is my body which will be given up for you.

When supper was ended, Jesus took the cup that was filled with wine. He thanked you, gave it to his friends, and said:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Then he said to them: do this in memory of me.

We do now what Jesus told us to do. We remember his death and resurrection and we offer you, Father, the bread that gives us life, and the cup that saves us. Jesus brings us to you; welcome us as you welcome him.

The mystery of faith:

All: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.
Or:
When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,
we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
Or:
Save us, Savior of the world,
for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
Or:
My Lord and my God.
Priest: Father, because you love us, you invite us to come to your table. Fill us with the joy of the Holy Spirit as we receive the body and blood of your Son.

Lord, you never forget any of your children. We ask you to take care of those we love, especially those for whom we now pray and we pray for those who have died. Remember everyone who is suffering from pain or sorrow. Remember Christians everywhere and all other people in the world. We are filled with wonder and praise when we see what you do for us through Jesus your Son, and so we sing:

Priest: Through him and with him, and in him, O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.

All: Amen!

The Communion Rite

Celebrant: Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,

A Sample text for Mass for First Holy Communion

Preamble: Thank you for all the effort and preparation you put into making your parish celebration of First Holy Communion something beautiful each and every year. It is hoped that this ‘template’ of some of the texts available for this ceremony in the new translation of the Roman Missal may be of help to you and ease the burden of your work. [There are a number of choices included. We also offer advice in the template indicated by blue text which is not designed to appear in your own text or booklet]

One of the first tasks we have before us to ensure that each candidate being presented for First Holy Communion is eligible – that they are baptised and
belong to the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church.

From the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 11:23-26
This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you:
that on the same night that he was betrayed,
the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it,
and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’ In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said,
Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’
Until the Lord comes, therefore,

Lord, you never forget any of your children. We ask you to take care of those we love, especially those for whom we now pray and we pray for those who have died. Remember everyone who is suffering from pain or sorrow. A Thiarna, de bharr shaothar Naomh Pádraig in Éirinn tá sé tar éis teacht linn rúndiamhair an aon fhíor-Dhia amháin a admháil agus buíochas a ghabháil as ár slánú i gCríost; de bharr a idirghuí deonaigh go

Liotúirge an Bhriathair
An Chéad Léacht: Sliocht as leabhar Irimia fáidh 1:4-9
Tháinig briathar an Tiarna chugam, á rá: “Sular chum mé thú sa bhroinn bhí aithne agam ort; sular rugadh
thú choisric mé thú; d’ordaigh mé thú i d’fháidh do na ciníocha.”
Ansin dúirt mise: “Ó a Thiarna Dia, féach, ní fhéadaim labhairt, óir is leanbh mé.”
Ach dúirt an Tiarna liom: “Ná habair, ‘Is leanbh mé.’ Téigh anois chuig gach duine chuig a gcuirfidh mise thú, agus cibé ní a ordóidh mise duit, déarfaidh tú é. Ná bíodh faitíos ort rompu, óir tá mise leat agus tusa faoi mo choimirce, is é an Tiarna a labhraíonn.” Ansin shín an Tiarna a lámh amach agus bhain le mo bhéal agus dúirt liom: “Féach, táim ag cur mo bhriathra i do bhéal.
Briathar an Tiarna– Buíochas le Dia

Salm Loinneogach: Salm 116 L Mc 16:15 Pat Ahern
Loinneog: Imígí faoin domhan uile; fógraígí an dea-scéal.

An Dara Léacht: Sliocht as litir Naomh Pól chuig na Rómhánaigh 10:9-18
Mar má adhmhaíonn tú ó do bhéal gurb é Íosa an Tiarna agus má chreideann tú ó do chroí gur thóg Dia ó mbairbh é, slánófar thú. Is sa chroí a bhíonn an creideamh a fhíréanaíonn agus sa bhéal a bhíonn an admháil a shlánaíonn. Agus deir an scrioptúr: “Gach aon duine a chreideann ann ní bheidh díomá air.”
Mar níl aon dealú idir Giúdach agus Gréagach mar is é an t-aon Tiarna amháin atá orthu go léir agus caitheann sé go flaithiúil lena nglaonn air, “mar gach aon duine a ghlaofaidh ar ainm an Tiarna, slánófar é.”
Ach conas a ghlaofaidís ar an té nár chreid siad ann? Agus conas a chreidfidís sa te nár chuala siad trácht air? Agus conas a chloisfidís trácht air gan duine á fhógairt dóibh? Agus conas a dhéanfadh daoine é a fhógairt mura gcuirtear amach iad chuige sin? Mar atá scríofa: “Nach álainn iad cosa lucht fógartha an dea-scéil.” Ach ní gach aon duine a ghéill don dea-scéal, de réir mar a deir Íseáia: “A Thiarna, cé a chreid ár dteagasc?” Is ó theagasc a thagann an creideamh, mar sin, agus is trí sheanmóireacht Chríost a thagann an teagasc féin. Ach ceist agam: An é nár chuala siad an scéala? Chuala go deimhin mar “chuaigh a nglór amach ar fud an domhain go léir agus a mbriathra go himill na cruinne.”
Briathar an Tiarna – Buíochas le Dia
Féach, táim in éineacht libh i gcónaí go dtí deireadh an tsaoil.
Glóir duit, a Chríost: is tú Briathar Dé!

An Soiscéal: Sliocht as an Soiscéal naofa de réir Mharcais 16:15-20
S Sliocht as an Soiscéal naofa de réir Mharcais P. Glóir duit a Thiarna
San am sin thaispeáin Íosa é féin don aonar déag agus dúirt sé leo: “Imígí faoin domhan uile agus fógraígí
an soiscéal don chruthaíocht uile. An té a chreidfidh agus a bhaistfear, slánófar é; ach an té nach gcreidfidh, daorfar é.
“Agus leanfaidh na comharthaí seo an dream a chreideann: caithfidh siad deamhain amach i m’ainmse,
labhróidh siad i dteangacha nua; tógfaidh siad nathracha ina lámha, agus má ólann siad aon deoch mharfach, ní dhéanfaidh sí díobháil dóíbh; leagfaidh siad a lámha ar easláin, agus beidh siad ar fónamh.”
Tar éis dó labhairt leo, dá bhrí sin, tógadh an Tiarna Íosa suas ar neamh, agus chuaigh sé chun suite ar dheasláimh Dé. Ach iad siúd, d’imigh siad leo agus chraobhscaoil siad i ngach áit, agus chabhraigh an Tiarna leo ag neartú an bhriathair leis na comharthaí a lean é.
Soiscéal an Tiarna. Moladh duit, a Chríost.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The central prayer of the Eucharist is the Eucharistic Prayer. One advantage of the new missal is that there are ten settings of this great prayer together in the one book. Explore the texts and the possibilities for various celebrations and occasions. Both Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation, for example, are very appropriate for the season of Lent and can be used with the Prefaces of Lent. In supporting the third stage of the Pastoral Programme for IEC 2012 the Dublin Eucharistic Congress Preparatory Committee proposes a possible ‘novena’ of reflections on the meaning of each element of the Eucharistic Prayer beginning on the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (Saturday 28 January) and concluding on the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (5 February). Brief people-friendly resources will be published in advance which can be shared daily with our communities as we grow in our understanding of the Eucharist during this year of the Congress.

Liturgical Music and the Congress
Arrangements are being put in place for the involvement of diocesan parish choirs/music groups throughout the country who wish to play a part in providing liturgical music during the Eucharistic Congress 2012. The core Eucharistic musical elements over the week will be taken from the collection Sing the Mass launched in 2011 by the National Liturgy Centre and will feature in particular parts of the following Mass settings: Mass o fSt. Paul(Ephrem Feely), Glendalough Mass (Liam Lawton), Mass of St. Columba (John Columba McCann), Mass of Renewal (Bernard Sexton) in addition to the updated parts of the Mass of the Immaculate Conception (Fintan O’Carroll) and the Mass of Our Lady of Lourdes (Jean-Paul Lécot). It is hoped that detailed information will be issued to parish musicians within the next few weeks about Congress involvement and the registration of musicians after which local rehearsal gatherings will be organised in advance of this great event. Copies of the music collection (book and recording) Becoming the Body of Christ are still available from the Liturgy Resource Centre and Veritas outlets.

Emmanuel 2012

Please support Emmanuel 2012 by coming to one of the performances in The Helix Glasnevin on 13/14/or 15 March at 8.00 pm. Interest is so great in this liturgical music programme for second level schools in this Diocese that a third day has been organised to facilitate the full complement of 2,200 students (over 700 a day) enrolled from 60 schools. One of the advantages of this programme is that it offers students and teachers a liturgical music repertoire for school Masses including Graduations and the feedback is that those preparing liturgies are using the material they have come to know and love. During the year the students practice in their own schools. On the day of their performance in The Helix they come together atClonliffeCollegeto practice and attend workshops on a range of spiritual topics. This project is managed by Grainne Clinton of the Liturgy Resource Centre with the generous co-operation of other members of staff on the Clonliffe campus. Ian Callanan is the music director and will conduct the orchestra and chorus on the night. Book now at 01 700 7000 or online at: www.thehelix.ie and bring some of your parish music group with you.

Confirmation 2012: Before Christmas, the Education Secretariat in conjunction with the Liturgy Resource Centre emailed out texts to every school and parish that should be very useful as you prepare your Confirmation Ceremonies. They include suggested passages of Scripture for this year’s ceremony, a selection of texts from the new Missal and suggestions for liturgical music. With the IEC 2012 taking place in Dublin this June, it would be very appropriate that each candidate knows the Congress Anthem and that it is used during the Confirmation ceremony. These texts are available online at: www.education.dublindiocese.ie. Soon, similar resources to help with the celebration of First Holy Communions will be made available to you.

· Thursday 2 February is World Day for Consecrated Life. TheDublin celebration will take place in theChurch ofOur Lady of the Wayside, Bluebell Avenue,Dublin12 (near Luas Bluebell stop) at 7.45 pm. when Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will lead a celebration of the Eucharist. Liturgical music will include excerpts from the Mass of St. Paul (Ephrem Feeley) and the Glendalough Mass (Liam Lawton) with the Eucharistic Congress Hymn Though We Are Many (Bernard Sexton) as the Communion Song. Music will be led by the Dublin Diocesan Music Group.

· Sunday 5 February - Archbishop Martin will lead the Dublin Celebration of World Day of the Sick with the Eucharist and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel,Mourne Roadon Sunday 5 February at 3.00 pm.

Initiation Matters

The Rite of Election (for Catechumens) and the Call to Continuing Conversion (for Candidates already baptised who wish to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church) takes place as usual on the First Sunday of Lent, 26 February 2012 at 3.30pm in St Mary’s Pro Cathedral. At this annual ceremony parishes presenting Catechumens for the Rite of Election or Candidates for Continuing Conversion to the Archbishop are vouching that their catechumens have journeyed for a minimum of one liturgical year and certifying that those they are presenting are ready to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the forthcoming Easter Vigil.

If your parish has someone who you deem to be ready for Christian Initiation or Reception at this year’s Easter Vigil and have not yet submitted completed registration forms to the Diocesan Liturgy Resource Centre, please do so immediately. The registration forms can be printed off from the Downloads section of www.litmus.dublindiocese.ie. Otherwise, contact us at the Liturgy Resource Centre and we will post them out to you.

Parishes with “elect” need to be aware of the new Missal’s Mass for the Celebration of the Scrutinies [pages 1029-1033] so as to prepare their Masses with the elect on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. These texts are used in conjunction with the texts for the scrutinies in the Period of Purification and Enlightenment (Lent) section of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. If you are celebrating these Masses with the scrutinies, the Gospel of the Samaritan Woman is always proclaimed on the Third Sunday, the Gospel of the Man born blind on the Fourth Sunday and the Gospel of the Raising of Lazarus on the Fifth Sunday [texts as found in the Sundays of Lent Year A]. During these weeks it is also recommended that the elect are formally presented with the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer.

Ministers of the Word

On the Diocesan website (www.dublindiocese.ie) you will find a link to download Scripture Notes from Diocesan Academic Coordinator of Biblical Studies, Fr. Kieran O’Mahony OSA for every Sunday. Fr O’Mahony has also included very helpful one or two line introductions to each of the readings which could be used by the presider or Minister of the Word. These resources are also available at his website www.tarsus.ie

Course for Cantors

Patrice O’Connor will present a course for cantors in 3 sessions on Wednesday evenings 22 /29 February and 7 March atClonliffeCollege (8.00 – 9.30 pm.). Total cost is €15 per person payable when booking. Form available online.

Concelebration

Veritas has now published Eucharistic Prayers for Concelebration (€14.99), which contains the ten Eucharistic Prayers and clearly indicates the parts which belong to the Principal Celebrant, along with the parts assigned to other individual concelebrants and all concelebrants.

Irish Mass Translation

The new Ord an Aifrinn has been in use inIreland since the beginning of Advent 2011. A selection of texts from the new translation is available currently in Veritas (€19.99). Approval of texts for the rest of the year is in hand. Mass will be celebrated using elements of the new translation on Thursday 14 June as part of the Eucharistic Congress in the R.D.S. Several composers are working on music for the new Irish Mass texts and these will be available in the near future.

Interesting Statistics

In the past year we have reached 80% of the parishes of the diocese through seminars, workshops and individual visits!

Festival of the Peoples

The annual diocesan celebration of the Eucharist incorporating the gifts, talents, music and languages of those who have come to live among us in Irelandfrom many different countries will take place again this year on the Vigil of Pentecost 26 May at 6.00 pm. in the Pro-Cathedral led by Archbishop Martin. Those initiated into the Church at Easter in their own parish communities will also be invited to take part in this celebration.

Litmus Website

We have been experiencing difficulties with our own website for some time now as we are being regularly ‘hacked’. With the help of the Communications Office we are moving material to a more reliable place and we expect all to be back up and running very soon.

Congress 2012

Because of our work in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress we won’t be in a position to offer extra workshops or individual visits in the coming months beyond our present commitments. However the work of liturgical renewal and the preparation for the Congress will enrich our parish liturgies and communities and we look forward to meeting you at various events between now and June.

Update Information

In recent months Grainne has been updating our database from the information you supplied for your parish. Help us continue this work by returning to her your latest contact list for those involved in liturgical ministry (litsec@dublindiocese.ie).

A. ‘O Sacrament Most Holy – Choral Music for the Eucharist’
Ms. Blanaid Murphy, Director of the Palestrina Choir, will introduce some of the music from her recent recording of Eucharistic Choral Music – O Sacrament Most Holy - which is very appropriate for the celebration of the Eucharistic Congress in June. Music will be available for this practical workshop for singers and choir directors.

B. ‘Work Together – Round 2’
Fr. Pat O’Donoghue, Director of the Liturgy Resource Centre, will offer ideas for liturgy groups working together. This session will focus on the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the Communion and Concluding Rites. It is a follow up to a similar session on the Introductory Rites and the Liturgy of the Word which was part of our autumn 2011 seminar. It is open to all members of liturgy groups and attendance at the previous session is not necessary.
Half Morning Workshops
C. ‘Lent – Mercy and Justice’
Ms. Hannah Evans, Church Officer with Trócaire, will introduce the Lenten 2012 Liturgy Resources. This year the focus will be on Trócaire’s outreach to the people of Uganda and how this can be expressed in the liturgies of the season. Copies of the Resources will be available on the day. This year Intercom will also include Trócaire Liturgy material.
D. ‘The Parish Baptism Team - Renewing our understanding and owning the meaning’
Ms. Colette Furlong, Pastoral Services Manager of IEC 2012, has extensive experience in working with Baptism Teams. In this session she will encourage team members to renew themselves and the understanding of their role in this important parish ministry.
E. ‘The Eucharist – Source and Summit’
Dr. Fainche Ryan, Lecturer in Theology at Mater Dei Institute of Religious Education, will invite you to explore the gift of the Eucharist by way of personal and community preparation for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in June 2012.
F. ‘Images of the Passion in Modern Art’
Fr. Damian McNeice, Master of Ceremonies to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, has a wonderful gift of blending his knowledge and interest in the visual arts with the call to reflection and spiritual nourishment. In this workshop he will explore the insights of modern artists into the Passion and Cross of Jesus by looking at works by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Craigie Aitchison, some stations from ‘The Golgotha of Jasna Gora’ by Jerzy Duda Gracz and recent sculptures by David Mach.

Special Celebrations

Winter/Spring 2012

· Sunday 15 January is World Day of Migrants and Refugees and resources are available from the Irish Episcopal Council for Immigrants. Pope Benedict XVI has designated ‘Migration and the New Evangelisation’ as the theme for this celebration in 2012. It is important to use the liturgical resources of the given Sunday for any of these celebrations. For example the theme of evangelisation could be highlighted in the invitation of Jesus ‘Come and see’ in the Gospel (John 1) and the call to service is richly described in the first reading (1 Samuel) and again in Psalm 39.

· Wednesday 18 January – 25 January is the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This year’s theme is ‘We will all be changed by the victory of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ (I Corinthians 15:51-58) and the liturgy ideas have been prepared by the Churches of Poland. Another of the Eucharistic Prayers in the new missal, the one for Various Needs – Form 1 – the Church on the Path of Unity, could be used each day of this Octave of Prayer. There are also texts for Mass for the Unity of Christians available in the new Missal from pages 1176 – 1181. It is the turn of the Roman Catholic Church to host the Inaugural Service for 2012 inDublin. It will take place in Milltown Parish Church of Saints Columba and Gall,Milltown Road,Dublin6 on Wednesday 18 January 2012 at 8pm. TheChurchofIrelandArchbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, will be the preacher and all are welcome. Prayer resources for your own parish are available online at www.ctbi.org.uk and www.oikoumene.org

· Sunday 29 January – Saturday 4 February is Catholic Schools Week and this year’s theme is ‘Catholic Schools: Christ’s living body active in our world’ inspired by Verse 3 of the Congress 2012 Hymn.

Last week I was appointed to co-ordinate the participation of choirs and music groups in IEC2012. I would be very grateful if you could pass this information to the music leaders in your parish.

How can your choir/music group participate?

We would like to invite Choirs/Music Groups to participate in the main liturgical celebrations of the week (10-16 June) in the R.D.S. as members of the Pilgrim Choir. This Pilgrim Choir will be divided into groups and will be seated in designated areas throughout the R.D.S. Arena under the direction of a conductor. Because there are musicians engaged to accompany the liturgies it will not be possible to accommodate individual instrumentalists for these liturgies. If your Choir/Music Group is interested in taking part in the Congress in this way the Directors are invited to register as a group no later than 18 April 2012 (you can book for 7 days, 3 days or 1 day). Book Online on the Congress website www.iec2012.ie/registration

What will happen next?

Your Choir/Music Group will start learning the repertoire of the particular day (s) which is available on the Congress website (www.iec2012.ie). In addition the members who have booked will receive a copy of the Pilgrim Choir Book which is in preparation at the moment at the first regional rehearsal of the Pilgrim Choir. The date and location of the regional rehearsals will be sent to Music Directors as soon as possible once the registration information has been collated.

During the Eucharistic Congress week, there will be another rehearsal on the day that your Choir/Music Group is involved. You will be provided with the relevant information on where to go, what to do and, most importantly, how to enjoy and to maximise this unique experience.

Musical Participation in the Statio Orbis at Croke Park – 17 June 2012

All those who register for 3 consecutive days of the Congress are entitled to a ticket for the Statio Orbis. Tickets are also distributed throughout the Dioceses of Ireland on a proportional basis. However to help realise the goal of congregational participation we will have a Croke Park Pilgrim Choir divided into groups and seated in designated areas throughout Croke Park under the direction of a conductor. The Congress Office has allocated (a substantial but limited number of tickets) for this Croke Park Pilgrim Choir and they can be booked and paid for as follows:

Request a booking spreadsheet from Germaine Carlos at choirs@iec2012.ie

Complete and return the booking spreadsheet to choirs@iec2012.ie

When the tickets are allocated you will be invited to send a cheque to cover the total amount for your choir(€10 per person), made payable to IEC2012, to 50th International Eucharistic Congress, at Sandymount Building, RDS, Simmonscourt Road, Dublin 4.

Rehearsals for the Statio Orbis will be incorporated into regional rehearsals mentioned above.

I look forward to hearing from your diocese

Ms Germaine Carlos
