Remembrance Service
15 November 2012
Prelude Instrumental (Irish)
Those whom we love and lose are not where they were before, they are wherever we are (St. John Chrysostom)
Opening Song Jesus Remember Me (Taizé)
All sing: Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom
Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom
Reading 1 Thess 4:13-18
But we do not want you to be uninformed about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we
believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Song The Cloud’s Veil (Liam Lawton)
All sing: Even though the rain hides the stars,
even though the mist swirls the hills
Even when the dark clouds veil the sky, you are by my side
Even when the sun shall fall in sleep
Even when at dawn the sky shall weep
Even in the night when storms shall rise, you are by my side
God is by my side. Verses (Susan Dowling)
Reflection Footprints
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there was one only.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from anguish,
sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
so I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints,
my child, is when I carried you.”
Song Bogoroditsye Dyevo (Rachmaninov) –
We invite you to touch the icon being passed around at this time. We pray that Mary may give you the comfort you ask for at this time
Reading John 19:25-27
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman this is your son’. Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother’. And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.
Song Ave Maria (Biebl)
Reading John 11:17-26
On arriving Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you. ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said I know that he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said:
‘I am the resurrection.
If anyone believes in me even though he dies he will live,
And whoever lives and believes in me will never die’.
Song Resucito (Kiko Arguello)
All sing: Resucito, Resucito, Resucito, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Resucito
Reflection Life
Life is but a stopping place
A pause in what’s to be,
A refreshing place along the road of sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys, different paths along the way
We all were meant to learn some things
But never meant to stay
Our destination is a place
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey’s quicker
For some the journey’s slow.
And when the journey finally ends
We’ll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace
Together with the Lord.
Instrumental
Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8 –
I for my part am already being poured out like a libation. The time of my dissolution is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on a merited crown awaits me. On that day the Lord, just judge that he is, will award it to me, and not only to me but to all who have looked for his appearing with eager longing.
Song Only This I Want (Dan Schutte) Verses
Only this I want:
but to know the Lord,
and to bear his cross,
so to wear the crown he wore.
Verses All but this is loss,
worthless refuse to me,
for to gain the Lord
is to gain all I need.
I will run the race;
I will fight the good fight,
so to win the prize
of the kingdom of my Lord.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:7)
Reflection In My Life (Instrumental)
There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With family and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all
But of all these friends and family
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Book of Remembrance
We invite you to place the names of those you love who have died into our Book of Remembrance
We will carry this Book to our Remembrance Service in the Monastery of St Alphonsus next week
Be assured that they will be remembered in prayer there for rest of the month of November.
Instrumental
Reflection Memories
Within my book of memories,
Are special thoughts of you.
And all the many nice things
You often say and do –
As I turn the pages,
And recall each single thought,
I realize the happiness
That knowing you has brought.
There are memories of the times we’ve shared
Both bright and sunny days.
There are memories of your kindness
And your friendly thoughtful ways.
There are memories of all those notes,
we would write back and forth,
When we would just get together,
And talk of this or that.
And when I recall these memories
As I go along life’s way,
I find they grow more precious still
With every passing day.
Song There is a place (Liam Lawton)
Reflection Remember Me (Group)
Do not worry about me, I am at peace.
I am with God now.
Think of me…
As you see a warm light flicker on a cold December night.
Think of me…
In warm happy colours
Think of me…
In the shaft of a summer sun that suddenly interrupts a dark sky
Think of me…
In a flowing meadow or a tranquil sea or when the morning sun announces a new day.
Think of me…
When you see your first daffodil trumpeting a new beginning.
Think of me…
On a spring day when the swallow arrives to bless another year.
Think of me…
At peace with myself, nestling in the palm of God’s and.
One day we shall meet again in a place not where death ends, but where life begins.
Instrumental Whistle
Reflection Miss me but let me go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set on me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little, but not for too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone.
It’s all part of the master’s plan,
A step on the road to home
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deed,
Miss me but let me go.
Song Voice of an Angel (Liam Lawton)
Concluding Prayer Let us pray,
God of love and compassion,
We hand into your loving care those who have died:
Bless them with your endless love
Comfort those who mourn them
Support us on life’s journey.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Song May the Road Rise to Meet You (Lori True)
May the Road Rise to meet you
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be at your back.
May the sunshine warm up on your face,
May the rain fall softly on your fields,
And until we meet again
May you keep safe in the gentle loving arms of God.
For every thing there is a season; a time for meeting,
a time to say goodbye.
In all things God is near, always guiding your way.
May the road rise to meet you ..
For everything there is a season; a time for listening,
a time to speak the truth.
In all things God is near, always guiding your way.
May the road rise to meet you …
